Local Emergency Planning Committee

The Chemung County LEPC was created in 1986 after state legislation required each county in New York to form an LEPC. The goal of the LEPC is to address hazardous materials issues for a safer community. Members include a wide variety of public servants, representatives from local industries and members of the public. While these committees are still concerned with hazardous material issues, the trend across New York State is to take an "All-Hazards" approach to planning. The LEPC now discusses issues of flooding and other natural disasters, as well as man-made hazards. Quarterly meetings are open to the public and are held at the Office of Fire and Emergency Management, 425 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, at 9:30AM.
