ELMIRA - Chemung County has approved a contract to Genfare, a division of SPX Corporation, to implement a “smart” upgrade to C TRAN’s fare collection system. Genfare is a leading supplier of fare collections systems in North America, with their systems being used by transit systems in the nearby cities of Albany and Rochester. The new system will make the rider’s experience more enjoyable, as well as enhance C TRAN’s access to ridership data.
Genfare’s e-Fare system has the technology to allow C TRAN riders to use reloadable smart cards with various payment options. For example, the secure fare collection system has the capability to offer daily, weekly, ten trip, and 30 day passes. Once the new smart-card system is in place, passengers will be able to purchase fare online and at a vending machine to be located at the Chemung County Transportation Center. When boarding a C TRAN bus, passengers will scan their smart card and the scanner will verify that the fare has been paid. Cash fare will still be accepted.
As a part of implementation, C TRAN’s operator, First Transit, has the capability to take credit card payments. Credit card payments will be processed from 8 am-5 pm Monday-Friday at Transit’s Administration building at 1201 Clemens Center Parkway and at the First Transit Region Office located at Grand Central Plaza. Credit card payments may also be made over the phone by calling 734-5212.
The ability to use credit cards as a payment method and to renew payment for monthly passes online reflects the needs of individuals and agencies not using cash as a payment method. C TRAN expects to roll out the more versatile and convenient Genfare e-Fare payment method to riders by spring.
