Health Dept. Offering Free Flu Shots

ELMIRA - The flu season is approaching fast and the Chemung County Health Department wants to make sure residents have received their flu shot. December 3-9, 2017 is National Influenza Vaccination Week. In observance of this week, the Chemung County Health Department is encouraging people who have not gotten the flu shot to get one now to protect yourself and your loved ones.

The Health Dept. has a limited supply of FREE flu shots available to Chemung County residents, ages six months and up, who are uninsured. Call us at 607-737-2028 (option 2) to schedule an appointment or if you have questions.

Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk of serious flu complications.

In addition to getting the flu vaccination, it’s also important to practice good health habits:

  • Cough or sneeze into a tissue or the bend of your elbow, not your hands.
  • Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you
    aren’t near a sink.
  • Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth. Flu can spread that way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Stay home when you are sick, and do not return to school or work (or group activities like
church) until you have been fever-free without medication for at least 24-hours.

Once vaccinated, you can enjoy this holiday season knowing that you have taken the single best
step to protect yourself and your loved ones against the flu. Call your doctor, pharmacy, or Chemung County Health Dept. to get vaccinated. Visit or call us at 737-2028 option 2  for more information.
