Swimming Pools & Bathing Beaches

Swimming Pools & Bathing Beaches

All pools in Chemung County open for use by members of the public are regulated by the Environmental Health Services (EHS) Section of the Chemung County Health Department.  Backyard pools serving private homes are exempt from State Regulation.  The regulations covering swimming pools are found in the New York State Sanitary Code. Some pools operate all year long while others only operate on a seasonal basis.  Seasonal pools undergo a pre-operational inspection prior to opening for the season.  All pools receive an operational inspection on an annual basis.

The regulations governing pools is found in Subpart 6-1 of the NYS Sanitary Code.  Click on the link in the box below to download the latest version of Subpart 6-1. Or for a .pdf of Subpart 6-1, click HERE.
