The Chemung County Health Department has received a number of calls asking why Chemung County reported positive cases of COVID-19 are different than what is reported by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).
Chemung County and NYSDOH use the same data source. The difference arises as the investigation is begun. It is not uncommon to discover during the investigation that a case was assigned to Chemung County incorrectly. For example, patients may have moved to a different county and did not update their address with their medical provider. Also, college students may be living in a different county.
Once this issue is identified, the next step is to forward the case to the appropriate county for follow-up. Once the case is sent to the appropriate county, it is no longer a Chemung County case. This case however, may remain listed as a Chemung County case by NYSDOH.
More important than the number of cases is the investigation itself. It is paramount that the investigation begin quickly and aggressively in order discuss the situation with the patient and their contacts and take the appropriate measures.
Currently the best way to lower your risk of contracting COVID-19 is to stay at home. If you do need to go out and maintain 6 foot distance from others.
All people tested are placed on quarantine pending test results.
Not all in quarantine are tested if they don't become sick.
