211 helplineELMIRA- Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli joins the Institute for Human Services, Inc. and their partner agencies in recognizing February 11, 2015 as National 2-1-1 HELPLINE Day.

2-1-1 is the simple, easy-to-remember telephone number to call for information about community services, programs and volunteer opportunities. 2-1-1 HELPLINE also schedules appointments for the region’s free tax preparation program, as well as meetings with local health insurance navigators. 

2-1-1 HELPLINE handled nearly 33,000 calls and more than 17,000 website visits in 2014 – connecting individuals to programs & services across five counties!

Each person who calls 2-1-1 HELPLINE is looking for help with a life problem, whether it’s hunger or shelter, counseling or a support group, legal advice or mediation, job seeking assistance or health insurance.  It’s also the number to call to volunteer for a cause you believe in!

While 2-1-1 dialing is relatively recent (as of 2008), HELPLINE, a program of the Institute for Human Services, Inc., has been in operation since 1984. Through the support of the Chemung and Steuben County Departments of Social Services, the United Way of the Southern Tier, as well as the NYS Office of Children and Family Services, this important service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Calls are toll free and confidential – and language translation service is available for more than 150 languages.
