Geographic Information Systems

A geographic information system (GIS) is an information system used to input, store, retrieve, modify, analyze, and output geospatial or geographically-referenced information. Layers of information can be created for specific land areas in order to enable a comprehensive analysis of the impacts of changes in land use and/or to measure the suitability of particular locations for new land uses. The Planning Department participates actively with other Chemung County departments and with local, State, and Federal agencies in exchanges of such information.

The Planning Department maintains an extensive collection of statistical and mapped geographic information, much of which is available both in paper and electronic (digital) formats. The Department maintains multi-year aerial photographs and orthophotogrametric imagery covering most lands located within Chemung County.

The Chemung County GIS Consortium ensures that all new geographic information exchanged by public agencies in Chemung County is developed in a GIS-compatible format with consistent mapping standards and regular updating schedules. The Planning Department participates in the consortium.
