The Chemung County Public Information and Records Department is responsible for releasing to the media information from the various county agencies and departments regarding upcoming events, programs, and services as well as keeping the public informed of the activities of County government and maintaining the County website. The Public Information Director works closely with the County Executive, Deputy County Executive and the County Legislature.
The department is also responsible for the storage, maintenance and disposition of records pursuant to the New York State Archive’s “Records Retention and Disposition Schedule CO-2” and other applicable statutory requirements.
In addition, the Communications Director serves as the County Public Information Officer (PIO) and is responsible for releasing County records under Article 6 of the New York State Public Officers Law, more commonly known as the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). The Application for Access to Records may be downloaded and mailed, emailed or faxed, to the Communications Director or you can obtain a copy of this form at the 2nd floor reception desk at the Hazlett Building. When you submit this form, FOIL allows five (5) business days to make the record available, deny access to the record with reason, or acknowledge receipt of your request and inform you of the time frame required to respond to your request.
NOTE: Birth and death certificates are not available through FOIL. Copies of birth and death certificates may be requested through the Office of Vital Records.
