DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The incumbent performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of heavy highway equipment. This work involves responsibility for performing skilled tasks in accordance with standard trade practices. The size and variety of equipment requires considerable initiative in devising methods of repair. Work is under the supervision of a shop foreperson who assigns jobs and inspects them upon completion. Supervision may be exercised over subordinates who assist when assigned to the shop. May operate equipment and provide manual labor as required. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (The following work activities are listed as examples only and in no event shall an employee be limited to only those examples listed here.)
  • Performs skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy trucks, earth moving, and related construction equipment, including gasoline and diesel powered equipment;
  • Responsible for upkeep and maintenance of heavy equipment and to fix equipment breakdowns;
  • Makes major repairs to equipment including but not limited to light and heavy trucks, tractors, graders, excavators, rollers, snow plows, and automobiles;
  • Provides computer diagnosis of various systems and components;
  • Inspects, adjusts, and repairs power units, hydraulic systems, injection valves and systems, electrical systems, brake systems, cooling systems, fuel and exhaust systems;
  • Troubleshoots problems, disassembling and reassembling engines and other components;
  • Work may be performed in the shop and in the field;
  • Cleans and maintains work areas free of tools, parts and debris;
  • Assists department during snow and ice removal operations;
FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade; working knowledge of welding required for equipment repairs; skill in the use of the tools and equipment of the mechanic's trade; good knowledge in the operation and maintenance requirements of heavy duty construction equipment; skill in use of computer technology to trouble shoot mechanical problems and maintain equipment records; ability to supervise the work of others; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; good judgment; ability to act independently; willingness to respond to emergencies and perform overtime work; willingness to work outside in adverse weather conditions; attention to detail; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; and successful completion of a 24 month heavy equipment, truck & diesel technician program with live diagnostics and repairs, and one (1) year of experience in the maintenance, repair and servicing of automotive and heavy highway diesel equipment at a similar sized county highway department, heavy truck and heavy equipment dealership repair shop, or equivalent; or;

B) Successful completion of a BOCES Diesel Equipment Technology, Maintenance and Repair Program, and three (3) years of experience in the maintenance, repair and servicing of automotive and heavy highway diesel equipment at a similar sized county highway department, heavy truck and heavy equipment dealership repair shop, or equivalent.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit at the time of hire. Must possess or obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire. License must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
