Elmira- Influenza rates are on the rise, with the highest level of reported influenza (flu) like symptoms since 2009. The Chemung County Health Department would like to stress that it is never too late to obtain a flu shot. “Vaccination is probably one of the greatest public health achievements in the entire history of public health” states Dr. Howard Zucker, the New York State Department of Health Commissioner. Flu vaccine is readily available at many local pharmacies and health care providers. Vaccination against the flu is important because if you do get sick with the flu, your symptoms may be lessened and your chances of hospitalization may be reduced.
Flu symptoms are typically characterized by fever, body aches, weakness and fatigue, cough and headache, and sore throat. If you do exhibit those symptoms contact your primary care physician and they may be able to prescribe treatment.
The Health Department would like to stress that the following actions will help prevent you from becoming sick or spreading illness if you do become sick;
- Proper hand washing
- Cover mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing
- Avoid large crowds
- Stay home if you are ill
