Cancer Services Program Partners with Local Restaurants

ELMIRA, N.Y. –  In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Cancer Services Program of the Southern Tier is partnering with local restaurants to raise awareness about the importance of mammograms for the early detection of breast cancer.  Nine restaurants in Chemung County are doing their part to help ensure women are being screened. The participating restaurants are promoting breast cancer awareness by wearing pink, giving customers pink straws, displaying pink ribbons in their windows and educating the public about the free mammogram program offered by the  Southern Tier Cancer Services Program.

“The Cancer Services Program wants send a big THANK YOU to the local restaurants helping us raise awareness about breast cancer,” said Denise Argetsinger, Case Manager. “Anne's Pancakes, Beef's, Curly's, The Diner, Wellsburg Diner, Sugar and Spice, Maple Lawn Dairy, Lights Bakery, and Turtle Leaf Café have all joined us in spreading the word about the importance of life-saving mammograms.  We hope people will go in and see them and thank them for their support of our program”.

One out of eight women will get breast cancer in their lifetime.  A mammogram is the best way to find breast cancer early, when it may be easier to treat. Having regular mammograms can lower the risk of dying from breast cancer.  The mission of the Cancer Services Program is to ensure that women without health insurance have access to life-saving mammograms. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in New York State, with more than 15,000 women diagnosed each year.  Chemung County rates for female breast cancer mortality are higher than New York State.

Residents should call their doctor to schedule a mammogram or call the Cancer Services Program of the Southern Tier if they are uninsured.  The program provides free breast, cervical and colon cancer screening to eligible New York State residents.   Residents can call Denise Argetsinger at (607) 873-1500 to see if they qualify.
