Records for births and deaths that occurred in Chemung County are available through this office; however, there are no records on file prior to 1875.  

Birth and death certificates may only be issued to eligible persons unless the record qualifies as genealogy.

Birth and death certificates and the indexes relating to births and deaths are not subject
to the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and are not open to public inspection.

Orders for certified certificates and genealogy records can be placed in person, by mail, email or fax.  

Please note:

Records for births and deaths that occurred in another municipality cannot be ordered through this office. Contact the city, town, village, state or country where the birth or death occurred for information.

Marriage and divorce records are not issued or maintained at this office. For marriage records and information pertaining to those records contact the clerk where the original license was obtained. Direct any requests for divorce records to the County Clerks office where the divorce was filed.

For adoption records or information regarding adoptions; contact the State Department of Health or the Family Court of the municipality where the adoption was filed.

Social Security inquiries must be directed to the Social Security Administration.

Immunization records are not maintained at this office; contact the physician’s office, hospital or clinic where the immunizations were given.
